Mass Readings: Jeremiah 7:1-11/ Matthew 13:24-30
I had traveled to Sicily to stay with a host family and learn Italian. As I cranked open the casement window in my small room to let in the spring breeze, a feeling of dread overwhelmed me as I wondered what I’d gotten myself into. Through the open window, I heard one word sailing on the breeze that brought sudden tears to my eyes. “Nona,” some child was calling. “Nona.” A little one speaking to her grandmother. The sound of that child’s voice overwhelmed me with happiness.
My grandchildren call me Nona. No name has ever made me happier. As we celebrate the feast of Mary’s parents, St. Joachim and St. Anne, I’m mindful of the great and unexpected gift of being a grandparent. Nothing compares to this God-given treasure of knowing and loving these precious little ones.
Prayer: Saints Joachim and Anne, please pray for all grandparents, especially those in difficult family situations.
